I’m Trying to be Transparent

I realized something the other day.

Facebook and Instagram and Twitter – these are all museums of (for the most part) our best selves.

Look at how pretty that profile picture is! Look at how awesome that person’s trip is going! Look at how inspirational that post was! Look at how politically correct that (still) super taboo post was!  Look at how funny my kids are!

Ugggh.

Do we really have to show all of our greatest moments? Make-up on, angle perfect, lighting just right, phrasing spot-on (how ironic, blog posts in general): it’s not who we are individually and if we’re truly honest, it makes us look a little vain.

I suggest something revolutionary:

  • take ugly photos with bad lighting, no makeup, and maybe hair undone.
  • share YOUR moments of failure
  • be vulnerable (to at least your friends in privacy settings) and share your shortcomings when you mess up or if you’re not doing okay or if you need something

To be clear, we don’t want all the dirty laundry of gossip and we don’t need to know that the reason you’re being a jerk is because you’re on your period, either. But if you open up yourself (depending on who you call friends on your friends list) a little bit, you might get some well-deserved support and encouragement.

And a little encouragement is something we can all use right now.
